12 Months to Find Work Legally
Spain Job Seeker Visa
Spain's job seeker visa, the Autorización para Búsqueda de Empleo (also known as the visa de búsqueda de empleo, or Employment Seeking Residence Permit), gives eligible non-EU nationals 12 months to live in Spain and look for work. It isn't the general, open-to-everyone route some guides suggest.
WHO IT'S FOR
Spain's Job Seeker Visa Isn't Open to Everyone
This isn't a digital nomad-style visa anyone can apply for. Under Articles 43 to 45 of Real Decreto 1155/2024, eligibility is limited to three specific groups.
Descendants of Spanish Nationals
Children or grandchildren of Spanish citizens by origin qualify under this route.
Professionals in Official Shortage Occupations
Roles listed on the government's official collective recruitment and shortage occupation lists qualify, professions outside these lists don't.
Recent Graduates of Spanish Institutions
If you completed higher education at a Spanish institution, at Level 6 or above under the European Qualifications Framework (a Bachelor's degree or higher), you may qualify to apply from abroad under this route too.
REQUIREMENTS
Spain Job Seeker Visa Requirements: Financial and Insurance
01
Around €7,200 to €8,400 — Depending on How It's Calculated
Both figures are correct, they're just calculated differently. Spain's IPREM index is around €600 a month in 2026. Some calculations use 12 monthly payments (€7,200), others use Spain's common 14-payment salary convention, with two extra payments built in (€8,400). We confirm the exact figure that applies to your application, so you're not caught out by whichever number a guide happened to use.
02
Private Health Insurance
Valid medical coverage for the full duration of your stay in Spain.
03
Clean Criminal Record
A police clearance certificate from your home country.
THE PROCESS
Applying Through Your Spanish Consulate
01
Submitting at the Consulate Before You Travel
If you qualify under one of the three eligible categories, you apply at the Spanish consulate covering your country of residence, before you travel to Spain.
02
Transitioning to a Work Permit Once You Have a Job Offer
Once you secure employment, this authorisation converts into a standard residence and work permit, without needing to leave Spain to do it.
A DIFFERENT SITUATION
Already Studied in Spain? A Separate 12-Month Route Exists
The consular visa and the student-transition authorisation get confused constantly, even though they're governed by different articles of the same regulation. As your Spain job seeker visa lawyer, we identify which one actually fits your situation before you apply for the wrong one.
Only for Graduates of Spanish Higher Education Institutions
If you've completed your studies at a Spanish institution at Level 6 or above, you can apply for this authorisation without leaving Spain and without a consular visa. It also lasts 12 months, the same duration as the consular route, despite some sources online citing a different figure.
Applying 60 Days Before, or 90 Days After, Your Student Permit Expires
You need to apply within this window. Applying after your student permit has already expired, within the 90-day grace period, can still work, but risks a separate penalty procedure for letting your prior authorisation lapse. Family members who accompanied you during your studies can generally be included too, tied to your own status.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Spain Job Seeker Visa
Who actually qualifies for Spain's job seeker visa?
Three groups: descendants of Spanish nationals, professionals in officially listed shortage occupations, and recent graduates of Spanish higher education institutions. Nationality alone, including Filipino nationality despite Spain's historical ties, doesn't qualify you outside these categories.
How much money do I need to show?
Roughly €7,200 to €8,400, based on Spain's IPREM index, the exact figure depends on the calculation method used. We confirm the precise amount for your application.
Can I stay in Spain after I find a job?
Yes. Once you have a job offer, this authorisation converts into a standard work and residence permit without needing to leave the country.
I studied in Spain — do I need a visa to look for work?
No, if you completed higher education at a Spanish institution, you can apply for a separate 12-month authorisation from inside Spain, without a consular visa, within a specific window around your student permit's expiry.
