BANKING
Open a Bank Account in Portugal Remotely
Opening a bank account in Portugal remotely is possible before you ever set foot in the country, but only with the right bank and the right documents lined up. We handle both.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why You Need a Portuguese Bank Account
Visa Requirements, MB Way and Local Payments
Most visa types require proof of local financial resources, and many landlords, utility providers, and employers only work with a Portuguese IBAN. Once you're here, MB Way and Multibanco (Portugal's local payment systems) only work with a Portuguese account, and everyday things like phone bills and rent are usually set up by direct debit, which foreign accounts often can't do.
Employers and Landlords Often Won't Work Without One
Beyond visa paperwork, plenty of everyday transactions simply assume you have one. Employers typically pay salaries into a Portuguese account only, and many landlords won't sign a lease without proof you can pay rent from a local IBAN.
THE PREREQUISITE
Opening a Portuguese Bank Account Starts With Your NIF
Almost every bank in Portugal will ask for your NIF before they’ll even begin the process. If you don’t have one yet, we handle that first, so it doesn’t hold up the rest of your move.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Bank Account in Portugal for Foreigners — What the Process Looks Like
01
Documents You'll Need
Beyond your NIF and a valid passport, banks typically ask for proof of address in your home country, proof of income (employment contract, payslips, or pension statement), and separately, proof of source of funds for anti-money-laundering checks, savings statements or documentation of where your money comes from, which isn’t the same thing as proof of income and often gets missed. Some banks now also require a Portuguese correspondence address before they’ll open an account, even for non-residents. If you don’t have one yet, this is exactly where our Rental Support service comes in, so this doesn’t become the thing that stalls your account. You’ll also need a phone number that can receive international SMS, for identity verification. If any of your documents aren’t in Portuguese or English, they may need certified translation, and in some cases, an apostille.
02
How Long It Takes — and What's Outside Our Control
Done directly with the right bank, this typically takes 5 to 10 business days once your documents are ready. That timeline depends on two things we don't control: how complete your documents are when you send them, and each bank's own processing pace, which varies. What we control is making sure nothing on our end causes a delay.
WHY PONTE
Why Choose Ponte to Open a Portuguese Bank Account for Non-Residents
We Match You to the Right Bank, Not Just Any Bank
We don't route every client to the same partner bank. We assess the real conditions available to your specific case, including the ongoing monthly costs, and recommend accordingly.
Why the Cheapest Account to Open Isn't Always the Cheapest to Keep
Some services get you into an account quickly through a fixed banking partnership, but that account often carries a higher monthly fee than one opened through standard conditions, because of how that partnership works. The gap is small in month one and adds up every year after. We check this before recommending anywhere.

NEXT STEPS
After Your Bank Account — Housing and Lease Review
Once your account is open, the next practical steps are usually finding a place to live and getting your lease properly reviewed before you sign. We handle both, and if you needed a Portuguese correspondence address to open your account in the first place, this is where that gets sorted too.
Frequently Asked Questions about Opening a Bank Account in Portugal Remotely
Can I open a bank account in Portugal before I arrive?
Yes, with the right bank and your NIF in hand, the account can be opened entirely remotely, no trip required.
Do I need a NIF before opening a bank account?
Yes, in almost every case. If you don't have one yet, we handle both together, so it doesn't add extra time to the process.
How much does it cost to open a bank account in Portugal remotely?
Our service is €400. This covers assessing which bank genuinely fits your situation, including ongoing costs, and managing the opening process for you. Send us your details and we'll confirm the timeline within 24 business hours.
Will I pay high monthly fees on my account?
Not if we can help it. Some remote-opening routes place you into a fixed partner account that carries a higher monthly fee long-term. We check the real cost of each option, including what you'll pay in year two and beyond, not just what it costs to open.
